Ophthalmic Technician 

Location:  On-Site in Pittsburgh, PA 15213 (Oakland area)

Work Schedule: Full-Time Daylight ScheduleMonday–Friday daylight hours, with shift times ranging between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM depending on clinic needs. No evenings or weekends are required. 

Travel Required: Travel to local clinic sites approximately 20% of the time

New Hire Starting Pay:  As a new hire, up to $24.00 per hour, based on skills and experience

Role PurposeA premier academic ophthalmology practice is seeking a detail-oriented, patient-focused Ophthalmic Technician to join our growing clinical team. Operating within a fast-paced, high-volume environment, you will work alongside world-class surgeons and residents to deliver comprehensive eye care to a diverse patient population.
 
This is a full-time, Monday–Friday daylight position (shifts between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM). We value work-life balance: no evenings or weekends are required. Key Responsibilities
  • Patient Assessment: Conduct comprehensive history taking (ocular, medical, social, and family) and perform visual acuity assessments (distance, near, pinhole, and potential acuity).
  • Diagnostic Testing: Perform lensometry (manual and automated), pupillary assessments, and visual field testing (Amsler grid and confrontation).
  • Clinical Measurements: Execute refractometry (auto-refraction and transposing scripts), tonometry (ICare and Tonopen), and ocular motility tests.
  • Clinical Support: Assist with angle assessments, pupil dilation, and contact lens instruction (insertion/removal).
  • Operations & Safety: Maintain sterile environments, disinfect specialized instruments, manage inventory/stocking, and ensure exam rooms are clinic ready.
  • Regional Support: Travel to affiliated regional satellite clinics (approximately 20% of the time) to support various clinical teams.
Required Qualifications
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience: Minimum 1 year of prior experience as an Ophthalmic Technician or a background in an optometric/ophthalmic clinical setting.
  • Must have optometric/ophthalmic experience in one or more of the following areas: 
    • color vision, Amsler Grid
    •  Pressure Check (Applanation, Tonopen, Air Puff)
    •  Refraction (automated and/or manual)
    •  Lensometry (automated and/or manual)
    •  Pupil Assessment
    •  Extraocular Motility (EOM), confrontation fields
    •  Keratometry (automated and/or manual)
    •  Pachymetry
  • Technical Knowledge: Familiarity with the AAO Home Study Course or equivalent ophthalmic training is a plus.
  • Skills: Ability to multitask in a busy academic setting and a commitment to providing compassionate patient care.
  • Requirements: Must have reliable transportation for travel to various clinical sites within the region.
