Purpose
The Oncology Pharmacy Technician Lead provides advanced technical expertise and clinical operations leadership within a highly specialized oncology pharmacy setting. Operating in close coordination with pharmacists and pharmacy management, this professional oversees daily technical workflows, ensures absolute regulatory readiness, and coordinates medication distribution. This role is vital to maintaining sterile compounding integrity, managing controlled substance inventories, spearheading departmental quality improvement initiatives, and mentoring and training staff to deliver exceptional patient-centered care.
Responsibilities
- Workflow Coordination & Leadership: Supervise daily operations, map technical assignments, and establish workflow guidelines within designated pharmacy units (e.g., sterile IV compounding, automated dispensing, or clinical research).
- Oncology & Sterile Compounding: Demonstrate precision in high-skill operational areas, supporting the safe procurement, accountability, storage, preparation, and distribution of specialized oncology medications and investigational study drugs.
- Medication Dispensing & Filling: Assist in filling complex medication orders by executing perfect counting, precise labeling, and strict stocking practices.
- Controlled Substance Management: Maintain accurate perpetual inventory logs and records for controlled substances. Ensure storage and dispensing are in strict alignment with the State Board of Pharmacy and DEA regulations.
- Regulatory Compliance & Readiness: Maintain rigorous documentation, including refrigerator temperature and eye-wash station logs. Ensure the pharmacy environment meets Department of Health, The Joint Commission, OSHA, and HIPAA standards.
- Inventory & Automation Control: Oversee daily inventory levels across medication stock rooms, automated carousels, and decentralized automated dispensing machines to ensure seamless clinical supply lines.
- Staff Mentorship & Training: Actively lead the onboarding, training, and competency validation of junior Pharmacy Technicians, developing targeted instructional materials to standardize best practices.
- Quality Improvement & Financial Integrity: Create and execute departmental quality improvement plans to elevate operational indicators. Accurately complete required data reporting, point-of-sale closures, and departmental billing by the end of each shift.
Minimum Essential Requirements
- Education: High School Diploma / GED
- Certification: Graduation from an accredited pharmacy technician training program and current/valid Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT)
- Professional Experience: A minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience as a Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Operations Specialist. Prior oncology or sterile compounding experience is highly preferred.
- Leadership Competency: Proven ability to lead peer workgroups, audit operational workflows, and design clear training or policy documentation.
- Technical Mastery: Exceptional critical thinking skills, high mathematical accuracy for inventory validation, and comfort utilizing advanced pharmacy computer systems and automated dispensing technologies.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances
- Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) status required.
- Active Pharmacy Technician Registration with the Pennsylvania State Board of Pharmacy.
