Role Type: Full-Time, Regular Employee (Permanent placement on company payroll, not contract/temp)
Shift: Rotating Shifts (5, 8-hour shifts per week; typical start times range from 6:30 AM to 10:30 PM. Evening and overnight shifts earn an extra $1.60 per hour differential).

New Hire Starting Salary Range: $18.99 – $22.50 per hour base wage (Plus applicable shift differentials, see below).

Purpose
The Patient Care Technician (PCT) in Behavioral Health provides essential direct patient care, psychiatric safety monitoring, and clinical support under the direct supervision of Registered Nurses (RNs). This professional assists patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) while executing core clinical nursing assistant functions, such as taking vital signs, performing point-of-care testing, and implementing crisis de-escalation protocols. Serving as an integral member of the multidisciplinary care team, this role is critical for creating a safe, therapeutic, and structured healing environment for behavioral health patients.
Responsibilities
- Direct Patient Care & ADLs: Deliver high-quality daily care, including assisting patients with bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulating, turning, repositioning, and transferring.
- Core Clinical Assisting: Routinely measure and record weights, vital signs, and fluid intake/output (I&O). Perform point-of-care testing, including blood glucose checks, and assist with physical, respiratory, or cardiopulmonary therapies.
- Advanced Technical Skills: Achieve and maintain competency in advanced clinical procedures based on department operational needs, including phlebotomy/venipuncture, 12-lead EKGs, peripheral IV removal, indwelling Foley catheter removal, basic arrhythmia recognition, or bladder scanning.
- Therapeutic Safety & Monitoring: Apply, monitor, and remove patient safety restraints in strict accordance with physician orders, standard precautions, and hospital emergency crisis guidelines.
- Status Reporting & Communication: Actively observe patients, providing immediate, clear feedback to the attending RN regarding changes in patient behavioral patterns, emotional states, or physical statuses.
- Universal Unit Activities: Contribute to efficient unit operations by responding to patient call lights, answering phones, passing meal trays, completing basic clerical functions, and managing internal patient transport ("ticket to ride").
- Patient & Family Instruction: Provide supportive instruction and routine guidance to patients and their families under the clear direction and scope of the supervising RN.
- Medical Record Documentation: Chart all completed treatments, vital signs, exercises, observations, and care outcomes directly into the electronic medical record (eRecord) system in a timely, precise manner.
- Maintenance & Integrity: Ensure medical equipment is functioning properly, reporting any faults or malfunctions to the appropriate department via the work order pipeline. Maintain strict compliance with data privacy laws; medication access is strictly limited to the distribution of packed medications directly to the nurse.
Minimum Essential Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Experience & Training Pathways (Must meet at least one):
- One (1) year of direct patient care or general healthcare experience; OR
- Six (6) months of experience as an internal Nursing Assistant/CNA with the ability to achieve PCT competency within 120 days of hire; OR
- Active enrollment in a Physical Therapy (PT), Occupational Therapy (OT), Physician Assistant (PA), or related healthcare training program with the successful completion of at least one clinical rotation; OR
- Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in a Health Sciences field.
- Technical Onboarding: Must successfully complete the organization's standardized internal Patient Care Technician training class and proprietary eRecord system training program upon hire.
- Core Competencies: Strong interpersonal communication skills, emotional resilience, cultural diversity awareness, and an understanding of workplace safety dynamics within high-acuity psychiatric units.
- Highly Preferred: Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic background, or current enrollment in an accredited EMT/Paramedic training program.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances
- Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification required within 30 days of hire (must follow AHA standards including a hands-on skills demonstration component). ACLS is preferred.
- Comprehensive Crisis Management (CCMC) certification required within 60 days of hire.
